Chetan Bhagat inspired book on IIPM

Following the success of books based on IIT and IIM, Pachaimuthu, a Gobichettipalayam born - IIPM educated grad, has decided to write a book based on his alma-mater IIPM. He goes on to say that with Arindham Chaudry jokes being re-tweeted and forwarded, people are more interested and curious than before to read what IIPM students do. "Well, we did nothing. In this book, I'll be elaborating on how we did nothing at IIPM."

When asked what inspired him to write a book, he said - "Well after graduating from IIPM, job wasn't really an option." Pachaimuthu, who insists on being called PM (well CB isn't really cool sounding but Chetan Bhagat uses it) admitted that his book would be heavily modeled on Five Point Someone. "Five Point Someone book cover has a by-line which reads 'What not to do at IIT'. I will be using a slightly tweaked version of the same which also has an answer in its latter part: 'What not to do at IIPM - join!'

"The book would basically be a journey of dares - Dare to think beyond IIMs, dare to think beyond expecting classes being taken, dare to think beyond getting a job, dare to think beyond getting a degree. Just pay the money, stay for two years and take home an Arindham Chaudry signed certificate.", PM said breathlessly, almost in fury.

Ask him how different it would be from FPS and he replies - "FPS was basically about 3 disinterested students, who in the end failed even to attend their graduation ceremony. My book would be about 3 disinterested IIPM professors, who forget to take classes right from the start. Well in IIPM its not much about students anyway. Its about Arindham Chaudry's jokes."

Title of the book?? "Dare to think beyond the title of the book", he snaps. Well, old habits die hard don't they?

  3. @Aakash Saikia: Agreed. I do not know anything about IIPM. I haven't been to IIPM. This is a satirical piece. Not intended to be taken seriously. And again, I've just put together public perceptions about IIPM to weave together a satire. Its just for laughs.
Working for Goldman Sachs? $35000? Good. Regarding 'You may never earn that amount in your lifetime', well lets see :) And if I've hurt any IIPM student/alumni/Arindham Chaudry, I'm sorry. Maybe I should've put a disclaimer.

  5. @AS: There are few things, that IIPM isn't getting right, sorry to say. For example, the degree awarded. The UGC doesn't approve that. Or for example blowing up placement figures. These are serious concerns, but they don't mention all these in their full page ads on Hindu. Even The Hindu newspaper must be blamed for irresponsible publication of content.
Monthly salary? Good. So I have a crorepathi reading my blog.

  6. See..you dont really seem to be up to date in this matter..nwadays degrees awarded nowadays are UGC recognized...u can clarify it from any place...yes d degree i have isnt UGC recognized..bcoz at dat tym UGC wanted IIPM to change certain course contents which IIPM wasnt willing to, hence d bottleneck...but anyways dat really doesnt matter coz in d end if u get a good job wid a good salary...u cant ask 4 anything else...yes I agree wid your publication related issue..dey do advertise a lot in all national dailies, not just the Hindu..and to be true, all IIPM centres may not be upto the mark..dey hav a centre at Patna also...so u cld well imagine the condition dere...but only d best go to IIPM International, Delhi and I am proud to be 1 of them. And yes u do have a crorepati reading your blog, by Indian standards..not by US standards...and I do have a hell lot of work, but when I see my Institute name getting beaten like this, it obviously hurts..

  7. @AS: Mate, you aren't really looking at the big picture. There are thousands of students from Tier 3 cities, who are the target group for IIPM. The people who want a PG degree, but are/aren't competent enough for better B-schools. IIPM makes it look like getting a degree is like getting a soap bar from a shop. Personally, I've attended the IIPM presentations more than once in Chennai, and certain tier 3 towns. Even the people who come to explain about IIPM aren't sure of anything.

And then, these poor people manage to get a loan or sell their properties to get an IIPM degree/certificate, ONLY for a good placement. But the placements they get are bad for a B-school. Some of them even get jobs as IIPM teachers. Others get literally menial jobs. The lucky ones who do get international placements, they jobs in worst working conditions in Gulf countries. I have PERSONALLY heard about such cases, and I have ALSO read testimonials from IIPM alumni about such cases of cheating.

When I said IIPM, I meant the IIPM group as such. Not IIPM International Delhi. In fact, if you are aware, many foreign universities, with which IIPM claims to be awarding joint degrees, have ACTUALLY gone on record to say they don't have any such collaboration with IIPM. So I DO know the situation. You might be one of the few whose life got better at IIPM. I've written this keeping in mind the thousand others who are being cheated. Plus of course for the fun of it. I'd advice you to do a bit more research about your institution, their cheap tactics, their bad credentials, etc before typing the next comment. PS: I have nothing against you, or IIPM personally. If you noticed, I even used a common name 'Pachaimuthu' and a lesser known place in Tamilnadu called 'Gobichettipalayam' to emphasize the places and kind of people falling trap to IIPM.

  8. Mate, there are so many IIPMs other than your Delhi International IIPM. IIPM has mainly been targeting Tier 3 students. They show them some pie chart of placements. These students take huge loans, trusting the placement figures. And then they get menial placements. There have been testimonials from IIPM students. Some even become IIPM teachers! In fact, I have attended the IIPM seminars more than once, and so I know the standards, the kind of lies they use on presentations.

    ReplyDelete
  9. And if you are aware, there has been an issue regarding the joint degrees IIPM claims to award with foreign universities. Many such foreign universities have written back, saying they offer no such joint degree with IIPM. There have been many fraudulent activities like this that IIPM has been doing. I have highlighted that. In fact, I guess you aren't half aware as I am, on the issue.

  10. Say I change the title to 'Chetan Bhagat inspired book on IIPM sans IIPM International New Delhi'? Would that be fine? Get a loan, study in one of the IIPMs, fail to get a decent job, struggle to repay the loan, thats the category I'm talking about, which you obviously don't seem to understand. Why doesn't IIPM say these figures pertain only to IIPM Intl Delhi?? Why can't they say the rest of our IIPMs are for the ones who aren't competent, and so the placements will also not be as good there?

  11. Bigger picture??? I will give you the bigger picture...

1)2-3 lakh ppl take CAT evry year...No. of seats in IIMs...at max 1000 for general category...rest reserved for sc/st/obc. these so called 'backward class ppl" dnt evn hv d basic knwledge...yet dey get to study at IIMs and IITs nd NITs...nd mayb many more. neways So basically you have to be a genius to get into those 1000 lucky...score 98%tile...if one is unable to..den shld he giv up his dream?? say a 92%tiler?DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE DAT DERE IS A HELL LOT OF A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 92%tiler and a 98%tiler???

    2) U may say dere r many odr premier private institutes...bt do you knw, you hv to apply to each of them seperately?? each 1 charges 1500-2000 for application...dat too you hav to apply b4 getting your results...1 has to apply to 10 sch institutes to hv 1% of a chance...are dese guys not cheating on us?? y dis kinda system ? are dey nt looting us? nd deir fees???dey also charge 10-15 lakhs...nd giv u a job wid a salary of 6.6lpa...dis is d avg figure of all so called top 25 b-schools..if So..y not a single system of entry???y isnt d admission process centralized?can u answer me ?

    3) And most importantly..lemme tell u my case....my father is a clerk...I got admitted to NIT rourkela...a govt clg..our tution fee was arnd 15000 per sem...still I hd to take up a loan bcoz my father cldnt pay my fees...engineering finished..i joined google...repayed d loan...bt i wasnt enjoying...since i wanted to get into management...so i started saving...took CAT...got 95.4%tile...bt cldnt make it to iims...hwevr by dat tym all odr b-schools hd closed deir application process...so wt shld hv I done???

waited fr anodr year??? nd wt if i failed again???SEE d condition...a 95%tiler cant get admission to any of d B-schools...coz of the so called SYSTEM...dis is d BIG PICTURE...

Atleast IIPM gave me d opportunity to get into my desired field of interest...I had to work hard to get a good placement...bt cld dis hv been achieved hd I waited anodr year??? GOD KNOWS...

DESE Things are only ROSY in MOVIES....lyk Aamir Khan saying " Engg ke baad MBA karnewaala GADHA hai"...and ppl clap and cheer at dese things only..BUT HE doesnt knw wt d status of an engineer is...Management guys are paid more dan a lakh a month...engineers on d odr hand are paid half dat amount(atleast in google, dont hv any idea regarding odr comp )..so tell me..DIS is OUR SYSTEM? Y ENGINEERS ARE TREATED LOWER DAN MANAGERS??? INFACT many of dese managers hv just sum b.sc or b.pharm degrees from c grade institutions...

EVERY1 is NOT BORN INTELLIGENT...KNOWING WHAT TO DO...WHAT NOT TO...WHAT TO STUDY and WHAT NOT TO...ONE HAS TO LEARN AND TAKE RISKS...and PPL MAKE FUN of them CALLING dem GADHAS...see this is d BIG PICTURE...D ENTIRE SYSTEM is rotten...IIPM is just a small drop in an ocean...

AND 1 more thing...u shld really try and check out d STANDARD of those ppl from IIPMs who DIDNT get a JOB or got in GULF Countries as Salesman...dat wld tell you a lot..Infact these ppl shld be thankful to IIPMs coz of which dey atleast got a degree...odrwise dey wld nevr hav..IIPMS do organize great summer and campus placements...bringing in sum of d best business houses...BUT...SOMETHING HAS TO BE DERE WITHIN AN INDIVIDUAL...NOT EVERYTHING CAN BE TAUGHT AT B-SCHOOLS...even IIMs hav ppl getting jobs of not more dan 6.5lpa...sum THOUGH get jobs...but are incompetent for the same... and hence hv to QUIT...dese ppl den start SO CALLED "TIME' and IMS and CAREER LAUNCHER wid d tag " IIM Alumini driven" n all..nd dont dey manage to loot ppl? every1 who undergoes training frm dese institutes gets into IIMs??? I hv seen sum seriously intelligent and harwrking ppl not getting into IIMs evn aftr getting coaching frm dese...so ISNT DIS WRONG ALSO?

like i said...it is nt just abt d iipms...it starts r8 frm d coke u drink to d MPs of our parliament..

    ReplyDelete
  12. so,as far as looting people or keeping dem in d dark is concerned...evry bloody institution in India does...r8 frm educational institutes to companies like adobe and microsoft and google...evry 1 has double standards for india....u shld cum ovr to d us nd den u wld knw d kinda lifestyle dese very companies allow u to live...india's so called it giants like infy, tcs pays peanuts to its engineers...isnt it? arnd 22K at max? dese same comp pay 5500 US $ to its engineers dere...chck out d eqn here..a 350 ml coke can costs 19 cents here in d us...it cost mayb 30-35 rs in india...u urself calculate d eqn den...d percentage of salary 1 has to spend to buy a coke...nd u will knw..so y dnt ppl raise dere voices regarding dese??? why?

As far as d degrees awarded by IIPM is concerned...lemme tell you...more dan 80% of d news you hear regarding anything and evrything is false...I have a degree from University of Buckingham...I did one of my trimesters at this very university...and d degree I have is very much respected..r8 frm boston to atlanta... The funniest part was when I came to knw thru sum source dat even d University of buckingham has stated dey dnt hv any partnership wid IIPM...when I have myself dined with deir Dean during my stay dere...and was felicitated by their vice-chancellor...well I really had a great laugh ovr dis...sum unscrupulous ppl say some nasty groundless things...and dat becomes news and ppl start believing dem...

well atleast i am very happy wid what i have done and what i have achieved..and yes you are true dat most of d iipm centres are not upto d standard...more bcoz of d kinda students dese get...i myself wldnt hv taken admission hd i got ny centre odr dan iipm international..but u also need to keep dis in mind dat dose very students, whom u r talking abt dnt evn deserve an mba degree....as far as cheating ppl is concerned...evry 1 in dis wrld does...and being an investment banker...i knw d truth more dan any bdy else..dis whole wrld runs lyk dis only...nd lyk i said no point blaming iipm alone..if u want something to change...try changing d entire system...only movies r made on dis, blogs r written...nobdy tries to actually do sumthing...and even I did d same...i became d part of a system dat ws responsible fr d biggest financial crisis evr...fr d millions of job lost...but y take pain when u are eligible for a bmw ride to your offyc evryday nd bk home???

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes the system sucks. Even I'm against reservation. I have suffered because of reservation. And yes, we should have a centralized exam system as you said. I'm one of those peanut salary engineers that you mentioned. Will be joining TCS next month. However, still feel IIPM should be transparent. I'm not talking about looting here, which like you said, EVERY B school does. My only point is, why admit students by showing them blown up placement figures. Like you said, they don't deserve a job/MBA degree, but they atleast deserve some transparency which says 'Dude, you're not good enough for IIPM Delhi. You'll get IIPM Patna or Chennai. The placement figures which we show in our ads don't apply to Patna or Chennai. So its your choice to take up IIPM or not.'
    That is my concern.

  14. I agree wid u man...bt lyk i said...dis i d way wrld goes arnd...nt jst iipm..evry thing dat is being advertised tries to sumhw dupe ppl..evry little thing...anyways i didnt knw u wld be joining TCS...srry if i hv hurt u wid my comments...bt wtevr i said is very true...d policies r such dat u r forced to leave ur country to find better opportunities...i myself nevr wanted to...bt eventually had to...nd life is nt as rosy here (atleast in d US) as it seems frm dere...u dnt hv ur family here, vry few frnds...dunno whom to trust..whom nt to..bt neways all d best to u fr ur job...njoy n keep writing.

  18. Dear Venky,
Pls dont freak out...... for the info. of all those who criticizes IIPM...saying tht PG and UG certificates are not recognized by the UGC......UG & PG certificates(of students in IIPM)are issued by various universities such as MS University, Baroda(which is certified by UGC)....

So pls shut the FUCKup and stop spreading this shit....

P.S.: Arindham mints money and makes ppl mint money...

  19. Thank u Aakash for sharing ur views with us.Ur understanding, analysis and the presentation of our educational system is really commendable! The more u discuss about this pollution, the more it stinks. The more the aspirants think, discuss n debate, the more they get confused. No one can be sure n confident of any educational institute of imparting the best knowledge and getting them a good job, till they join those and are themselves the victims! So,the only way is to take risks n face them boldly. The ultimate result depends on the motivation n perseverance of the student himself. After all,we are the creator of our own destiny.

  20. Hi Akash!If possible,can u plz share ur views abt IIPM Khar(Mumbai)?

  21. Do a little research and you would realize Akash (if we may call him so) is bluffing. The minimum Goldman Sachs starting salary is $35000 pa http://www.salarylist.com/company/Goldman-Sachs-Salary.htm

IIPM by their own admission did not get anybody placed outside India and the middle east. Now unless Akash is a brilliant kid who cooked up the CAT, then joined IIPM, got placed in India or the UAE and then by his sheer perseverence, got a job in Goldman Sachs and then made partner (a rarity as Goldman Sachs rarely takes grads with work ex even from the Ivy league) (I dare not mention IIMs as IIPM is selfrighteously beyond them) He does not work in the USA, does not work for Goldman Sachs and definitely does not make crores year after year. If the latter is true, as is likely, then this long discussion is in line with IIPM marketing and counter marketing strategy. Akash first tells Venky to get his facts right, Venky presents what he knows. Akash sensing a deadlock then presents a poignant and heart rending tale, however, the contradiction is unless he hates his alma mater (NIT Rourkella) he should really not be going on a hate drive denouncing all government colleges in one go. As to the question about 92%ile and 98%ile, the difference is that while the latter would be ranked at about 4000 in the CAT, the former will have a rank of 32000, surely being an engineer, Mr. Akash not only could do this math himself but had also gotten a first taste of it when he 'snatched' a seat from another candidate in AIEEE. Ofcourse, the reply to this post will come in due time, full of spite for the author to dare to think beyond IIPM and about how the author should have gotten his facts right before commenting, the author begs the quetion, as did Venky, where are the facts? Why does IIPM only participate in rankings which praise it in qualitative terms and not provide quantitative facts for readers to judge for themselves. Ofcourse one might reply that IIPM is above such petty tricks to ensnare students, tricks repeatedly utilized by IIMs XLRI etc. in which they lure students to take CAT and XAT by posting bombastic average and top salaries, which admittedly are brought home by few of the students at these colleges.
Lastly, the language used by Akash is unbecoming of a Goldman Sachs partner. But ofcourse, living the busy life that he has, he must not have the time to reply to every anti IIPM post by insignificant bloggers, in page long replies with anything but SMS lingo.
